I just arrived in Spain. My program doesn't start until tomorrow when I will meet my host family and all of the other study abroad students as we go through orientation over the weekend. My plane got in last night around 9 pm, I got some euros at the ATM in the airport and caught a bus further into the city. However, the closest bus stop to where I would be staying the night was about a mile away. I also did not have any phone service yet, or Wi-Fi. Luckily, (and I recommend this to everyone before travelling) I had downloaded a map of the area around the airport on Google Maps so that I could at least find my way around. So I made the mile-long trek, carrying my 50-pound duffel bag the whole way. I found my way to my Airbnb where my host, Danilo, was waiting with a warm welcome and a cold cerveza. I got a good 13 hours of sleep and woke up at about 2:30 pm (I blame this on jet lag - Spain is 7 hours ahead of Minnesota). Anyway, I woke up and realized, I'm in Spain!!! I went outside to look around and ended up finding a large hill with a castle-like structure on top of it. After checking out Castell De Sant Ferran, I found this small restaurant called Kebab Rey where I found a delicious dish called plato kaft. However, the restaurant was closing so they gave it to me in a to-go box and I left to go eat it at a park and then realized that they did not put a fork in the box. I then proceeded to eat the food with my fingers, sitting on a park bench like some well-dressed hobo crazy person. But it's fine because I was starving and I probably won't be back around this area again any time soon. I look forward to tomorrow and the rest of my time here. My host family consists of a couple and their daughter and they have a son who lives in the same building as well. I hope we get along well! I'm really excited to begin this journey and I hope that I'll learn a lot of Spanish, try some delicious food, and that I end up loving the culture and people here in Spain! I'll try to post again in a couple weeks!
